Professor Haider Al-Shammari, a faculty member from our college, participated in the international scientific conference of the College of Law at Al-Mustansiriya University with his research entitled “Towards a Legal Regulation for University Legal Clinics in Iraq.”
Al-Shammari stated that his research aimed to develop the work of legal clinics in colleges by enacting a law regulating their work, granting privileges to members working in the legal clinic, and coordinating cooperation between universities and relevant bodies (the Supreme Judicial Council, the Bar Association, the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs, and civil society organizations).
He added that the most prominent findings reached are the importance of enacting special legislation regulating university legal clinics in Iraq. This law should include a clear definition of these clinics, specify the responsibilities of students and supervisors, and establish mechanisms for cooperation with judicial and legal authorities. This law should also provide financial and administrative support for legal clinics and include legal clinics as part of the curricula in law schools, making them a core subject within legal study programs. This will contribute to strengthening applied legal education.
