A scientific committee at the College of Law / University of Karbala discussed the doctoral thesis of the student Shaima Taram Lafta Al-Nawfali, tagged with “The International Protection of Mass Graves in the Light of the Rules of International Humanitarian Law”
The study aims to find procedures and mechanisms undertaken by the state towards victims at the internal level, and means and procedures at the international level resorted to by international bodies such as the International Committee of the Red Cross and the International Committee for Missing Persons, as well as means of repression and punishment, as the courts are one of the most important effective deterrent devices that ensure respect and protection of cemeteries Collective. The researcher reached the most important results:
International protection in its broad sense in our time, in particular, is a humanitarian and moral necessity, and this is what most countries of the world have agreed to in order not to violate the sanctity of mass graves.
The mass grave island containing the remains of victims of international crimes committed against them.
The study revealed that mass graves are a phenomenon as old as humanity.
The researcher proposed a number of proposals to strengthen new mechanisms capable of protecting mass graves during armed conflicts.
