Karbala University discusses a master’s thesis on criminal policy in criminalizing negative social norms and customs.
The Faculty of Law at the University of Karbala discussed a master’s thesis entitled “Criminal Policy in Criminalizing Negative Social Norms and Customs – An Applied Study in Iraqi Society -“.
The thesis was submitted by the student Jumana Sattar Turki, and this study aimed to provide protection for the individual and society from negative social norms and customs that threaten the lives of humanity, by explaining the role of criminal policy in confronting it through legal and punitive legislation and limiting it as outdated and outdated norms and customs It works to spread violence and aggression among members of society.
The study showed the great role of norms and customs in Iraqi society as an officer of social controls, but this does not stand in the way of the legislator in criminalizing dangerous behaviors that threaten the security of society, which are the source of some negative social norms and customs, as in the case of revenge, as well as the firing of firecrackers and bullets. . In addition, the aim of using the weapon of criminalization in the state is to protect the social entity and achieve humanitarian goals represented in regulating the relations of individuals and making them what they should be in social transactions.

The study concluded that the criminal policy is an integrated plan developed by countries to confront and prevent crime and that it is an expression of developments in society and its impact on the factors that surround the society, especially the prevailing norms and customs.
The researcher also suggested a number of proposals, the most prominent of which is the recommendation to amend some provisions of the Penal Code by tightening or introducing, as is the case with the crime of the clan bench, in order to achieve the desired goal of criminalization, as well as the need to activate what is applied in a firm and serious manner in order to stand on these customs and customs.
